  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Matthew Powell -- Great approachable read- listening to the audiobook next! : This is the first spy novel I’ve read in a long time and it reminded me how good it can be to be immersed in a gripping high stakes book. I appreciated how it wasn’t too out of reach as my knowledge of the Middle East isn’t broad, making it approachable. Highly recommend! ( Reviewed in the United States on October 5, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from RS -- Damascus Station : David McCloskey's first novel is a compelling and realistic political and spy drama set during the early stages of the Syrian civil war. Unlike many American "spy" thriller authors, his book actually emphasizes spycraft and espionage rather than gunfights, explosions, and special operations. The plot is a bit of a slow burner initially, with suspense gradually building, and the author skillfully creates tension out of seemingly mundane moments, like a character inserting a USB stick loaded with CIA spyware onto her boss's computer. Eventually, assets are compromised, a bomb is built in preparation for an assassination, a chemical weapons attack is in development, and a Russian counterintelligence team is sent to Damascus. Throughout, with a diverse cast of believable and developed characters, McCloskey treats readers to a glimpse of life inside a CIA station abroad and to the inner workings of the neurotic and sociopathic Assad regime. Highly recommended, especially for readers of Daniel Silva and Charles Cumming, and hopefully the first of many more books to come from this author ( Reviewed in the United States on October 11, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Becky Friedman -- Couldn't put this one down!! : I love spy novels, but somehow the smart, tender peek into the realistic people juggling their own priorities, loyalties and affections ramped up the stakes in the most satisfying way. I loved hanging out with Sam and Miriam and all the clever, complex, compelling world shakers around them. This is a thrilling story, stayed up way too late because I couldn't stop turning the pages!!!! ( Reviewed in the United States on October 5, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Marybeth Allen -- Top-notch spy novel : A beautifully written novel from an author who clearly knows his stuff. McCloskey draws you in with a deep knowledge of his subject (Syria) and wonderful development of characters. The main character—Sam—is not some exaggerated, borderline-super-hero like Mitch Rapp or Scot Harvath. He is an authentic spy runner who personifies the moral ambiguities of the clandestine world. The book is wonderfully fun and entertaining, but exhibits more depth than your average spy novel. McCloskey marries sophisticated, modern tradecraft (a la Jason Matthews) with the prose of Le Carre. A wonderful read that I truly enjoyed and could not put down. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 5, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Kate Scully -- Great read! Excited to see what’s next for this author : I am already eagerly awaiting McCloskey’s next novel. This book has it ALL. Interesting characters. Excellent plot. Details that could only be written by a true former CIA agent. McCloskey is the real deal and takes the reader through an authentic, exciting journey in his debut novel, I would highly recommend this book to anyone who loves a classic spy thriller, but I think it has a lot of elements that would attract those who typically find themselves in other genres. My favorite read of the year. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 5, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Robert James Vandevoort (Show Low, Arizona) -- Damascus Station - A Stunningly Great Novel : The Damascus Station of the Central Intelligence Agency, located in the United States Embassy, has its share of challenges. Following the death of President Hafez al-Assad it 2000, he is replaced by his son Bashar al-Assad. Bashar is a doctor, a graduate of Damascus University. His post graduate degree in ophthalmology was obtained from a British school. He is married to the beautiful Asma al-Assad. That, however, does not mean that he doesn’t have affairs. He does.
